The goal of the biology doctoral program is to train scientists who: excel at research and teaching in their own subdisciplines; demonstrate competence in fields allied to their subdisciplines; and. display a breadth of knowledge in biology as a whole.
Dissertation Requirements The PhD is awarded once a student has completed the dissertation and conducted the oral defense. The defense is facilitated by the thesis advisor and doctoral committee. The dissertation must be organized and written in a form approved by the thesis advisor and the dean of the Graduate Division. For a PhD, your research work makes a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding in your chosen field. For an MPhil, your work is an independent piece of research but in less depth than for a PhD. You’ll graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy. You might be able to change to a PhD while you study for an MPhil.Department of Biology. Our studentships are fully-funded by UK Research Councils, charities or industry. Funding. Projects funded by BBSRC, NERC and MRC are only available for UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements (minimum of three years continuous residency in UK immediately prior to the start of the PhD).

The Ph.D. program in the Bioinformatics subprogram inherits all course requirements of the Informatics Ph.D. program; that is, a total of 72 semester hours (37 semester hours of coursework) beyond the bachelor’s degree, consisting of 21 semester hours in core coursework (Bioinformatics, Genetics, Biology, and Informatics), seminar hours in Ethics, and 6 hours in Grad Statistics coursework.
As an earned research degree, those studying for a PhD are usually required to produce original research that expands the boundaries of knowledge, normally in the form of a thesis or dissertation, and defend their work against experts in the field.
Students pursuing a PhD in Biology and simultaneously earn a certificate in biophysics by completing a distribution of coursework. The MIT Biophysics community hosts regular seminars and an annual retreat that brings together students, postdocs and faculty who share common scientific interests.
Beginning on December 1, the Department of Biological Sciences will evaluate applications to the Ph.D. program in the order in which they were submitted. All applications submitted prior to the final deadline (January 2, 2020) will be evaluated, but applicants submitting their applications earlier are more likely to be invited to the recruitment Open Houses.
