Ph.D. Requirements. The goal of the biology doctoral program is to train scientists who: excel at research and teaching in their own subdisciplines; demonstrate competence in fields allied to their subdisciplines; and display a breadth of knowledge in biology as a whole.
Like many doctoral programs, individuals have the choice of selecting their degree concentration in cell and molecular biology, ecology, behavior evolution and marine biology, and neurobiology.Ph.D. candidates must take a qualifying examination, which consists of a series of written examinations on specific subject areas administered by each Advisory Committee member, followed by an oral examination on the same subjects, as well as general subjects in Biology.Degree requirements: You’re normally expected to have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in a subject relevant to your chosen area of research.
Admission to a PhD in Biology program could require applicants to have a bachelors degree in biology or a related science. It might also be necessary to have a strong foundation in mathematics (calculus), chemistry (general and organic) and physics. But that’s not all.
Dissertation Requirements The PhD is awarded once a student has completed the dissertation and conducted the oral defense. The defense is facilitated by the thesis advisor and doctoral committee. The dissertation must be organized and written in a form approved by the thesis advisor and the dean of the Graduate Division.
